Classical Guitar Lessons in Philadelphia and Online

I'm John Marcel Williams, a classical guitarist and teacher based in Philadelphia. I offer private lessons in Center City/Rittenhouse and online, working with students of all levels. Lessons focus on healthy technique, efficient practice and the music you want to work on.

Alongside my private studio, I teach guitar at the University of Pennsylvania and Rowan University. My work as a concerto soloist, chamber musician and recitalist informs my teaching.

What we work on

Private lessons are 60 minutes and cost $100. We work at a pace suited to your experience and goals, whether you are building a foundation or refining advanced repertoire. A lesson might focus on tone, a difficult passage, or a more effective way to practice between meetings.

The aim is to help you understand what to work on and how to approach it. Healthy technique and focused practice support musical expression.

Audition and competition preparation

I also help students prepare for conservatory and music school auditions and competitions. We work on repertoire, technique and a practice routine for your audition or competition.

I studied at the Peabody Conservatory with Manuel Barrueco and at the Curtis Institute of Music with Jason Vieaux and David Starobin. My orchestral appearances include Elmer Bernstein's Guitar Concerto with the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra and Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez with the Main Line Symphony Orchestra.
